Asphalt Paving Vaughan

Before proceeding with a construction or repair, it is important to figure out a few things: the material used, the structure of the site, and the construction processes. Therefore, we always conduct thorough analysis onsite to make sure the most suitable material and processes are picked for the particular site structure.

The majority of roadways are paved using asphalt concrete because of its durability. The substance derived from petroleum mixed with gravel stones is able to overcome the high pressure from vehicles, decreasing likelihood of wearing out.

Generally speaking, blacktop structure can be broken down to a few layers: the AC layer, the sticky layer, the penetration, and the foundation. Mastering the correct processes of handling these coverings can best prevent formation of potholes and quick wearing out in the future.

3 Steps of Asphalt Paving

With that said, we do our blacktop pavement in three steps:

1. Removal of old bitumen: We generally remove about 2 inches(5 cm) of old asphalt although exactly how much of a depth we go will depend on individual situations and needs. Be warned that some companies actually skim on this step, claiming to remove 2 inches while only removing 1.5(3 cm), saving them 0.5(2 cm) inches of new substance and thus decreasing the durability considerably. The removal process will expose the raw surface underneath. It’s important to keep it dry. Now it’s important to ensure the strength and flatness of this raw sheet. Poor execution of this step will likely lead to future disaster.

2. Laying Hot bitumen: We heat up the tarmac before laying it on the raw track. It’s imperative that it be laid on evenly. If there’s a height difference on the track after laying, it’s important to remove the excess or add on to the lacking side. In addition, to prevent sinking after compaction, we always make the new surface a bit higher than the original, while maintaining the tar temperature greater than or equal to 120 degrees Celsius.

3. Compaction: We use compactors to roll over the new pavement. A proper compaction should start from the side and progress to the middle. An improper compaction starting from the middle will lead to the highest point being in the middle, resulting in puddles. Furthermore, it will decrease the durability significantly. Proper compacting process will ensure natural water flow to the side, preventing any formation of puddles. Generally, it takes 3 to 4 repetition of rolling on the same area to make a well compacted roadway.

After compacting, traffic can begin once the surface temperature drops below 50 degrees Celsius.
