What exactly is asphalt? What exactly is asphalt?
Asphalt, also known as blacktop, bitumen, tarmac, and asphaltum, is the mainstream material when it comes to the pavement business. A well paved bitumen road is derived from careful inspection and execution of every step involved in the construction process. The steps include but are not limited to selection of the material, the choice of mixing formula, the production and delivery of concrete mixing plant, the laying and the compaction. A well paved job requires all the pieces to come together in a coherent, organized manner. |
What’s the Asphaltum Paving Process?
Preparation process:
Unless it’s a newly-built building, chances are there’s already an old layer to be replaced. Therefore, the first step of the process is actually stripping out the old layer. We want to be careful not to tear out the existing base underneath so it stays nice and firm.
Once the old layer is removed, we’ll check the underlying base, making sure it’s firm, solid and not moving. We do that by driving a loaded truck over the existing base and see if it moves or not.
Without a good base, anything we pave on top isn’t going to hold up in the long term.
Remember, a good surface starts with a good base.
Laying:
Depending on the type of project, the number of layers and the type of tarmac we apply will be different. Commercial projects generally require stronger and thicker material due to the amount of traffic and heavier vehicles. Residential projects, on the other hand, generally require a thinner layer since the usage is generally lighter.
On commercial projects, a base layer called binder is laid on first. The binder is a functional layer that’s not as aesthetically pleasing as the surface coat because it does contain bigger rocks, making it stronger. The next step would be the covering, where a finer material is applied on top of the base layer. The surface layer is where aesthetics matters so it’s important to make it look perfectly smooth.
Compaction:
After each laying, rollers come in and drive on the layer, compacting the material such that it becomes very solid and dense. Depending on the area of the construction site, different sizes of rollers would be appropriate.

Crack Filling
After that harsh winter each year, your concrete or blacktop parkway decided to crack. A little crack might not seem much. But the longer you wait, the more likely the crack will deepen, adding danger and disturbing the view of your property. That’s why it’s best to strike the iron while it’s hot.
Seal Coating
There’s just something about a black top avenue that adds beauty to a property. Maybe it’s the rich black appearance, or its contrast to surrounding elements that really makes it pop. Whatever the case may be, seal coating provides that black top appearance, making it shine bright like black gold.
Striping
With traffic incidence increasing every year, the importance of proper striping and marking of the road has never been so prominent. Our striping material provides visibility during day and night, serving as friendly reminder and safety boundaries to drivers and pedestrians alike.
Pothole Repair
Nobody likes pimples on a pretty face. The same goes for a pothole on an otherwise well-paved road. A pothole not only decreases the aesthetics of the road top, it interferes with the safety of road users. Our pothole specialist will assess every pothole on a case-by-case basis, giving every pothole the best treatment possible.
Interlocking
When it comes to connectivity and flexibility, nothing speaks louder than interlock. As you probably know, the earth is a fluid structure, meaning the ground literally shifts and shuffles, albeit very slowly. Interlocks provide that fluidity so that it stays intact and undamaged whereas other covering types would have cracked. Call us to see if you qualify for our interlocking service.
Paving in the Winter, the Canadian Way
As Canadian as it sounds, the GTA area spends a substantial amount of time covered in snow. Due to the temperature and humidity, paving during the winter is less than ideal. Therefore, we focus on snow removal services during winter. Although we’re busy shoveling the snow for our clients during the winter instead of laying tarmac, mortar and bricks, impossible is not in our dictionary. We go out of our way to make sure our customers are satisfied. If we see that there’s a need for emergency service, we’ll still take on the project and deliver it without any discount on quality.
10 Easiest Hacks Paving Companies Don’t Want You to Know That Will Preserve Your Driveway Condition and Extend Its Shelf life
We live in Southern Ontario, which means that we experience a temperature as high as 41 degree Celsius(105 Fahrenheit) during the summer and as low as -33 degree Celsius(-27.4 Fahrenheit) during the winter. Due to this nature of temperature swing, we experience thermal expansion during days with higher temperature and thermal contraction during days with lower temperature, both to a significant extent.
Beside the extreme climate, certain things seemingly harmless can actually bite your pathway if you give them a chance. The most commonly seen crack-giving creatures are trees with strong, deep roots.
As a result, it is actually quite common to have cracks on your road top. Especially during the winter, snow mixed with water from melted snow can really drive into those cracks and deepen them, giving you massive headaches as if the Canadian winter isn’t harsh enough.
As such, how to take good care of your passageway so that you can utilize it fully and maximize its lifespan becomes crucial. The following are 10 easy hacks anyone can do to prevent those gnarly wrinkles from even appearing in the first place.

As such, how to take good care of your passageway so that you can utilize it fully and maximize its lifespan becomes crucial. The following are 10 easy hacks anyone can do to prevent those gnarly wrinkles from even appearing in the first place.
Hacks you can do all year round:
- 1. Transplant trees and shrubs with widespread root systems. If left alone, the roots will eventually damage concrete or blacktop road.
- 2. Adding curbs to your pathway, setting a boundary of 2 to 3 inches between the road and lawn. This way, melted snow and puddles will have a way to go.
- 3. Apply driveway sealer regularly. High-quality sealer can very well protect the surface from snow damage. Do this hack annually, preferably in the Fall.
- 4. Make sure your path is clean all year round. Blow out leaves and grasses with a leaf blower and get rid of oil stain with a high pressure water jet, if available.
- 5. Avoid letter water from rain gutters flow onto your drive.
- 6. Avoid parking heavy vehicles and appliances in your parkway. Residential parkways are designed for domestic cars such as sedans and SUVs.
- 7. Remove snow and ice on your parkway as soon as possible. Melted snow refrozen into ice will crack the covering.
- 8. Use deicing & anti-icing products with caution as they can potentially penetrate the exterior and cause damages in the foundation. Rock salt, for example, can deteriorate the material and create cracks. In addition, it also has the potential to damage the plants in your garden, corrode metal, etc. You might as well substitute those harmful products with cat litter or sand, increasing friction on your frozen, slippery surface.
- 9. Take advantage of natural sunlight. Spray a layer of sand on your ice-covered path. As sand heats up under sunlight, it radiates its heat to the surrounding snow and evaporates the snow. It might start off looking like a freckled face, but worry not as it will end up with zero trace.
- 10. When removing snow using a snow blower, set the auger or impeller at an appropriate height such that it doesn’t scratch the road.
